Ceramic Mug Pressing Instructions
How to Press Ceramic Sublimation Mugs
Recommended starting points for clean, consistent results.
Ceramic sublimation mugs are one of the most popular blanks for decorators, schools, teams, gift shops, events, and resale orders. The right time, temperature, pressure, and artwork setup can make a big difference in the final result.
Use the settings below as a recommended starting point. Results can vary by mug press, paper, ink, room temperature, artwork coverage, and production setup, so we recommend testing one mug before running a larger batch.
Recommended mug press settings
- Resting temperature: 330°F
- Operating temperature: 350°F
- Time: 50 seconds
- Pressure: Medium
- Artwork: Mirrored
- Paper: Sublimation transfer paper
- Transfer removal: Remove the transfer immediately after pressing
- Cooling: Cool in front of a fan or cool carefully in water
Good starting point: 330°F resting temperature, 350°F operating temperature, 50 seconds, medium pressure.
If your image is light, faded, or incomplete, check pressure, transfer contact, and temperature before adjusting time. If your image is blurry, scorched, or has shadowing, check tape placement, remove the transfer immediately, and make sure the paper did not shift during pressing.
Basic pressing steps
- Prepare your artwork. Size your design for the mug and mirror the artwork before printing. Use sublimation ink and sublimation paper.
- Clean the mug. Wipe the mug surface with a lint-free cloth to remove dust, fingerprints, or debris.
- Position the transfer. Wrap the printed transfer tightly around the mug. Keep the design straight and secure the paper with heat tape.
- Press the mug. Place the mug in the press using 330°F resting temperature, 350°F operating temperature, 50 seconds, and medium pressure.
- Remove the transfer immediately. Use heat gloves and peel the transfer right away after pressing.
- Cool safely. Cool the mug in front of a fan or cool carefully in water. Handle hot mugs with heat gloves.
Troubleshooting common mug issues
Faded image: Check pressure, transfer contact, paper direction, and temperature before adjusting time.
Blurry image or ghosting: Use enough heat tape, keep the paper tight, and remove the transfer immediately without sliding it across the mug.
Brown or scorched areas: Confirm the press temperature, avoid over-pressing, and make sure the transfer is removed immediately after pressing.
Uneven color: Check pressure, make sure the transfer is wrapped tightly, and keep important artwork away from the handle area.
Helpful production tips
- Test one mug before running a full batch.
- Keep notes for each mug style, press, paper, and setting.
- Use heat gloves when handling hot mugs.
- Do not package mugs until fully cool.
- Store sublimation paper and blanks in a clean, dry area.
- For repeat orders, save the artwork template and press settings that worked best.
